New England Slavery - A History
Join us here at the Pembroke Council on Aging Monday, February 27th at 5:30 pm for a special presentation by Dr. Kerima Lewis. Dr. Lewis teaches history at Massasoit Community College and Emerson College in Massachusetts. She previously worked in social work and law and holds a B.A. degree from Northwestern University, a M.S.W. degree from Hunter College School of Social Work, a Juris Doctor degree from New York University School of Law, and a Ph.D. in History from University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Lewis’ dissertation is on the history of slave resistance in colonial New England. Her article “Captives on the Move: Tracing the Transatlantic Movements of Africans from the West Indies to Colonial New England,” was published in the Historical Journal of Massachusetts (Summer 2016). Dr. Lewis’ current book project examines arson as a weapon of slave resistance. As a local historian, she is often asked to present on the topic of slavery in New England.
