We advocate for full and equal rights for persons with disabilities in the Town of Pembroke 

The Pembroke Commission on Disabilities is a group of volunteers appointed by the Select Board who serve 3-year terms. This seven (7) member commission works to advocate on disability-related issues. Members work on projects to improve access for persons with disabilities in the Town of Pembroke. This involves reviewing Pembroke’s Self Evaluation and Transition Plan written by staff from Weston & Sampson, an environmental and infrastructure consulting firm. Members may also make recommendations and provide technical knowledge on key topics to related town departments, businesses and organizations.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to promote equality and advocate for people with disabilities in the Town of Pembroke. We strive to comply with Title II of the American with Disabilities Act by reducing architectural, attitudinal, communication and procedural barriers in addition to promoting equal access to housing, education, employment, transportation and civic activites. The Pembroke Commission on Disabilities strives to spread awareness and gain support within the community to provide resources, knowledge, understanding and creative ideas to complicated problems. 

COMMISSION GOALS

The Pembroke Commission on Disabilities advocates for the full inclusion, integration and participation of people with disabilities in Town of Pembroke services and recreational activities, advises and assists town officials and employees in addressing barriers that people with disabilities face, advises architects, contractors, and builders at the beginning of the design process. This proactive approach is the key to avoid having to be reactive to access barriers and code violations.Identify the needs, problems, and barriers that disabled Pembroke residents face today and determine the best possible solutions by performing research, analysis and participating in group discussions, participates in disability related training and informational programs at the local, regional, state, and federal levels. This allows us to stay up to date with ADA laws and regulations as they are modified or added, provides information, referrals, guidance, and technical assistance to individuals, public agencies, businesses, and organizations in matters pertaining to disability and ADA regulations, supports and advocate for training relevant to people with disabilities who reside or work in the Town of Pembroke.

Maintain a point of contact for people with disabilities in need of equipment, transportation or other basic needs.

SERVICING THE COMMUNITY

PCOD currently provides a point of contact by staffing volunteer office hours twice weekly to assist people with disabilities in need of equipment, transportation or other basic needs.

Any member of the PCOD must be registered to vote in the Town of Pembroke & be motivated to work on disability related problems. Anyone who is interested in the work of the PCOD or interested in becoming a member is invited to attend our monthly meeting and/or apply in person at the Selectmen’s Office in the Town Hall located at 100 Center Street in Pembroke, Massachusetts.
